The networking scene changed a little (well, a lot!) during COVID-19, but it still very much exists … and is still very much a vital element of any small to medium businesses. Bookkeepers are often self-employed. We may operate our own business, and have employees or contractors assisting – similar to many of the SMEs we work with, so we understand what it’s like for many of our clients.

For many of us, networking becomes part of our everyday working lives, but there are other ways to extend the olive branch and align yourself with likeminded businesses in an effort to support and guide each other. Networking can seem daunting, but it is crucial for business growth. Not only do you share knowledge, you also have a community to support you if issues arise.

I love being part of the Pure Bookkeeping Network group based in Frankston. We meet monthly via Zoom, I decided to ask my group a question ‘Which app has changed their world, and what advice would they tell their younger self?’ The answers were insightful, so I thought I would share them all with you.

Apps that changed their world:

  • Last pass – Removes the need to remember personal/business passwords making your files more secure.  You can even add notes and information and rest assured they are safe.
  • Asana – Workflow management for personal and business. Helps to keep on top of tasks and projects.
  • Receipt Bank – This one is a total game changer! It has reduced time spent on client files. Sometimes it pays to invest in your business and look beyond the cost of the subscription and see its true value
  • Trello – Workflow management used for business. Streamlined our delegation of tasks and allows us to see where the priority is for the day/week.

What would we tell our younger selves?

  • Don’t stress, it will all work out in the end
  • Don’t take on other people’s issues
  • Long term goals will provide clarity on where you want to be in the future
  • Work experience means so much more than study results
  • Career success is not the be all and end all – happiness comes in more ways than simply being successful work-wise
  • Stop and smell the roses
  • Prioritise time with your family – they’re the most important aspect of life

Keep smiling,

Keri
